Photography Final Year 1

Color - Big
Using the grim greenish color and dim background, it's shows the weather here in the city of Portland. The green is shows the summertime coming but with the grayish background, it shows the amount of rain we have regardless of season.

Expressivism - Stranger
This photo shows one of my friends kinda stressed out and feeling really down. My other friend however is suppose to be the stranger in this photo comforting her.

Instrumentalism - Confusion
This is a photo where we see my friend playing checkers. She spends a LOOOONNNNNG time making her next move since it could change the way the entire game could turn out. This is kinda like a life after highschool since you have to make your plans carefully before fully committing to it.
Fun Fact: she won

Project 7 - Alternative Processes

Wet  Plate Collodion
By John Milleker Jr.

Wet Plate Collodion is an early photography technique created by Frederick Scott Archer in 1851. What you would do is add an iodide to a solution of collodion and proceed to coat a glass plate with the new mixture. You then would place the plate in a darkroom where it would be left in a solution of silver nitrate in order for it to form silver iodide. The photo would then be developed by pouring potassium cyanide over the plate.

Cyanotype
By Anna Atkins

The Cyanotype process was created by Sir John Herschel in 1842. The cyanotype solution is made up of 2 other solutions which are Potassium ferricyanide and Ferric ammonium citrate. You start by mixing the 2 solutions to create the cyanotype solution. You then paint the canvas with cyanotype solution. Next, you print your cyanotype by placing the negative image on the canvas and expose it to UV light. Finally, after the image has processed, you rinse the image in cold water to remove the chemicals.

Gum Bichromate
By Lillian Baxter

The Gum Bichromate process was created back in 1839 when Mungo Ponton discovered that dichromates were light sensitive. The process begins with having a good negative in the actual size of the finished print. You then want to mix the gum arabic, dichromate, and watercolor. Next you want to brush the chemical onto a paper over the an area slightly larger than the negative. After allowing the emulsion to dry, you want to place the negative onto the emulsion and sandwich the emulsion with a glass plate. Finally, you want to place the image under UV light for a few minutes and rinse the image with a gentle stream of water and hang it for it to dry.

Project 6 - Layered Photography

Layer #1
The purpose of this photo was to show off some of the beautiful flowers we have here at our school. All these photos were taken in the courtyard where you can find these flowers/bush. What I did was turned the opacity of the bush and yellow flower with the white flower being the very bottom layer. With it being the very last layer and the opacity of the other 2 photos toned down, it makes it harder to see the white flower.

Layer #2
The purpose of this photo was to show off our courtyard one last time. Since we are moving back to our old (new) campus, I wanted to have one last photo shoot in the courtyard. The day I took these photos, it was still a cloudy day but at the time it was getting really sunny. What I did to take the photos was that I stood in a corner of the courtyard to get one shot, then I went over to the other corner and did the same thing. Finally I got a shot of the back entrance of the courtyard for a bit of symmetry.

Layer #3
These photos were taken during first period dance class. Originally, this last layered photo was meant to feature all of the performing arts classes but music and theater don't have a first period class. The purpose of the photo was to give a little sneak peek of what the beginner dance class is working on for Arts Alive. Personally, I didn't get to go to Arts Alive last year to support my friends, but this year I plan on going to support my friends and to see time and effort each dance class put into their dances.

Panorama
This panorama was taken right on my porch. This panorama gives me that summer time feeling. It also reminds me of when I was younger. When I was younger in the summer, my brother, aunts, and uncles would always be outside enjoying the sun and carefree time we had. Looking at this photo, makes me miss those times before they all moved out of Portland.

This is a Google Docs of all the photos I used in each Layered Photo

Project 5 - Texture

Man-made/Rough Textures
The rough textures in this grid makes the skull in the middle pop out more with it being the only smoothish texture in this grid. The surrounding rough walls make it look more ominous with the dark black unknown. The paint on the paintbrushes in the corners were dried and make it look like the whole brush was rough and worn out.

Mechanical/Metallic Grid
This grid was made of the more metal things in this school such as the little grid things near the windows out in the hall. The main purpose of this grid was to show all the little things we use metal for to give it that either smooth but cold feeling.
Natural/Nature Textures
This was actually my favorite grid to make cause I personally liked all the photos that I took for this grid. The flower in the center was broken up into different pieces in order for me to zoom in for each part of the flower. This grid was mainly to show the beautiful side of nature and how you can get lost in the world.

Project 4 - Camera Controls

My depth of field photos were taken in the library during an average Portland day. The deep depth of field was taken at a F/stop of 5.6 to get the background a but blurred where as the shallow depth of field photo was taken at a F/stop of 22 to to the background clear and the subject in front was a but blurry. My shutter speed photos were taken at Multnomah Falls over the weekend. The slow shutter speed photo was a hard to take since the path was very narrow and I needed to take a tripod to take the photo. In the end I managed to take it with the shutter speed at 1.6s. The fast shutter speed photo was easier to take since we didn't have to wait 1.6 seconds for the photo to be taken. Instead it was taken at the speed of 1/800s.

This photo was taken during my trip to Multnomah Falls and was difficult taking since it ended up raining soon after. In the first edit, I turned up the brightness and contrast to make it a bit easier to see. In the second edit, I turned up the saturation and exposure to make the mossy rocks on the side pop out more. In the last edit, I desaturated the photo to make it look more gloomy.

This photo was also taken during my trip to Multnomah Falls and was kind of scary for me to take since I had to lean over a bridge to get the shot of the little heart. In the end I asked a friend to take it for me since I was scared I would end up falling off. In the first edit, I changed the color tint to make it look like it was a sunny day. In the second edit, I changed the color tint again to make it look like it was a lot colder than it really was. In the last edit, I turned up the contrast a bit to make it look like it wasn't super warm or gloomy.

This photo was taken on a bridge in downtown (forgot which one). It was a a really nice day out and I had just finished listening to a presentation at Doernbecher's Children Hospital. In the first edit, I lowered the brightness to make the sky look more ominous and gloomy. In the second edit, I turned up the brightness and saturation to give the sky that clear look. In the last edit, I had a higher exposer to make it look like there was something happening in the really bright part in the background.

This photo was taken in Walmart after watching the movie Hidden Figures. We decided to go to Walmart just to walk around and talk. In the first edit, I lowered the brightness and contrast to make Lisa look like she was up to something no good behind Kenny's back. In the second edit, I desaturized the photo and made it as if something bad was happening in the near future because of something Lisa did. In the last edit, I changed the color balance to make it look like as if Lisa was about to confess to Kenny about her love for Kenny but she's shy.

Project 2 - Color Theory

Mood Photo By Eric Ogden
This photo creates an image that puts me in a state of wonder. The photo plays with the color inside the building making it more dark and gloomy. Whereas the color outside is a bit more bright and vivid making it seem like there's more to be seen on the outside.

Mood Photo By Johnny Vu
The mood this photo gives me is a calm and chaotic one. The bright light in the sky has the faded clouds which gives me a calm feeling. While all of the cars with the lights being crowded gives me a chaotic feeling as if everyone is in a rush to get home after a long day.
